Vizag Araku Tourism Package, Visakhapatnam

Introduction

Visakhapatnam, described as the City of Destiny, is becoming a destination of global tourism on the east coast of India. The un-tired continuous efforts of the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) transforming the port city in to a tourist paradise with rich eco-environs and must-see destinations. Apart from the spots promoted by the State tourism Department, VUDA has been developed a number of tourism projects on its own. Being the statutory Urban Development Authority, comprising a jurisdiction of 1721 Sq.Km in the districts of Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram (both are having historical significance and heritage), it is involving and initiating in the promotion of tourism to attract tourists from all over the globe.
In fact the metro has all the trappings of well-developed tourist destinations like Singapore and the Government has time and determination to put Vizag on the international tourist map. Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority took a lead role in developing and promotion of tourist sites in and around the city. It is VUDA that held media conferences in other prominent metros like Delhi, Bangalore etc., and draw the attention of the people towards the tourist attractions in the
City of Destiny.
The Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority is pioneering in carving natural beauties in the form of tourist spots to the Port City.
The ultimate aim of VUDA is to make Vizag not only be the city of destination, but would also be a city of delight.
Here is the gist of some of the tourism projects promoted and maintained by the VUDA.
This east coastal city is the commercial industrial heart of Andhra Pradesh's isolated north-east corner the fastest developing cities in Asia, and is home to India's largest shipbuilding yard. Originally it was two separate towns- the northern and more urbane Waltair and the southern port town of Visakhapatnam also known as "Vizag". From a small fishing village, it has burgeoned into a bustling port and also an important industrial and commercial city. The hilly seaside area of Waltair is edged by long beaches affording views across the Bay of Bengal and the busy Kolkata-Chennai shipping lane. it is also known for country's largest ship building yard. At Simhachalam Hill, 10km north of the town, there's an 11th century Vishnu temple in fine Orissan style. The best beach is Rishikonda, also about 10km north. It is over 600 kms from Hyderabad. The most conspicuous landmark at Visakhapatnam is the Dolphin's nose. Visakhapatnam was named after the God of Valour, Visakha. Once a small fishing village, it formed part of the Kalinga empire, under Ashoka in 260 BC., passing successively from the Andhra kings to Vengi to the Pallavas, Cholas and Gangas. In the 15th century, Visakhapatnam became part of the Vijayanagara empire.
Araku Valley is located at a height of 3,200 feet in the midst of the hills of Anantagiri, Araku Valley is a beautiful and enchanting hill station. The salubrious climate, musically gurgling streams, the rainbow-creating waterfalls and lush green landscape can offer a memorable escape from the city life. The valley is located about 112 kilometres from Visakhapatnam. Araku Valley is home to 19 indigenous tribes and offers a wonderful opportunity to get insights into the lifestyle of these tribes and their culture and traditions. Dhimsa dance, a kind of folk dance, is a major attraction for its rhythmic beats and colourful costumes. Itika Pongal is a popular festival that is celebrated in the region and is worth experiencing.
Borra Caves are located 1,400 metres above sea level in Visakhapatnam's Anantagiri area. The caves are famous for their beautiful stalagmite and stalactite formations. Borra Caves have both religious and historical significance. The locals flock to the caves to worship a Shivalinga and an idol of Kamadenu, the divine bovine goddess of Hindu mythology. This idol is located deep inside caves. The rock formations inside the caves look like udders of a cow and hence, these caves also are called Gosthani William King George belonging to the Geological Survey of India was instrumental in discovering Paleolithic implements in 1807. It is believed that these implements were about 1 million years old.
Visakhapatnam (also known popularly as Vizag) is the largest city in Andhra Pradesh. It is primarily an industrial city, but also attracts tourists due to its unspoilt sandy beaches, well built and maintained parks and nearby scenic areas, such as the Araku Valley. Currently the city has a population of about 2 million.
There are plenty of places to visit in Vishakapatnam and its vicinity. The golden unspoilt Rishikonda Beach is a great place to indulge in some water sports during your vacation. Nearby is the Kailasagiri Hill Park which offers a spectacular view of the bay and is one of the many picnic spots in Vishakapatnam. Dolphin’s Nose, Submarine Museum, the city zoo, the harbor, and Matsyadarshini Aquarium are some of the places to see in Vishakapatnam.
Apart from the common Vishakapatnam tourist places, a drive along the coastline can bring you to various hidden slices of heaven. Tiny islands, isolated beaches, and pristine lakes are some of the lesser known Vishakapatnam places to visit.
A little further away from the city (6 hrs by train/public bus), but worth visiting for the scenic valley. A slow, passenger train leaves the Vizag station early in the morning (at 6:50 AM), and the train ride is actually very enjoyable. Make sure to reach at least an hour before its departure to get a seat. The runs through lot of small mountains and tunnels. Araku valley is definitely not a day trip, but the recently constructed APTDC facilities can serve as a decent over night stay.Make sure to book your APTDC rooms early. Padmavathi botanical gardens is worth taking a look at. November to February are the best months to visit this place and making an early reservation in the lodges is advisable as Araku Valley has very limited number of lodges and hotels. Travel in and araku valley is limited by limited public bus service. At APTDC lodge, cabs can be hired for a day trip thru the valley to Bora caves and the ride is amazing.
Reputedly fantastic caverns that had their native charm earlier, these caves have been modernized recently by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC). There is a entry fee of Rs. 30. Separate charges are there to enter with still or video camera. It is a must visit place for all tourists visiting Vizag. Don't forget a big bottle of drinking water.
