Introduction
Along the upper reaches of the London Road, facing the common, stand a number of villas where spa visitors would have stayed in the Eighteenth Century. Amongst the oldest of these is one that is weather-boarded, tile-hung and built in a traditional Kentish style.
In the Nineteenth Century the building acquired fame becoming home to English novelist, William Makepeace Thackeray. The town features in a number of his works, notably 'The Virginians' and the essay 'Tunbridge Toys' in which he recalls his childhood here.
"I see Tunbridge Wells Common and the rocks, the strange familiar place which I remember forty years ago."
Thackeray's is now a restaurant with a quality worthy of its setting.
