Smitty's Market named one of the top five barbecue restuarants in Texas...Texas Monthly Magazine.
Nina Schmidt Sells established Smitty's Market in 1999 in the building that housed her father's Kreuz Market for more than 50 years. The market sits in the same location where barbecue has been sold in Lockhart since the turn of the last century.
Edgar A. "Smitty" Schmidt, purchase Kreuz Market in 1948 from the Kreuz family.
Nina Schmidt Sells waits in line to enjoy some of her father's barbecue at the old Kreuz Market. Her son is now the pit master at
Smitty's Market where her father honed the art of smoking meat to sheer perfection.
Lockhart - If there is a Barbecue Capital of the World, this is the place. From what we hear, there's about 11,000 people in this small town who are easily outnumbered by a prodigious army of ribs, cuts of brisket, some amazing shoulder clod, and countless links of sausage. Barbecue runs this town. With 4 major BBQ joints, the proprietors simply recommend you try all of them and pick your favorite. We were not disappointed by our journey to Smitty's Market and Kreuz Market (pronounced "Krites" by the locals, although they understand that they just made that up).
