Palace Chine Edinburgh opened it's doors in 2001, offering a new and fresh approach to authentic Chinese cuisine. The concept was an ancient one; Chinese Emperors, nobles and elites used to retain the services of special chef's who were skilled and highly trained in the culinary arts. The best and brightest of these were adept at making herbal medicines palitable. It was a skill that required education and training at the highest levels. It was the belief that food is a form of medicine, containing nutrients that replenishes the body which led to the introduction of herbs into cooking.
This infusion of medicine and food was instilled into the heart of the owner, Brian Wang as a young adult when he visited China for the first time. His family fled to Taiwan, where Brian was born, after the communist took over China, Mr. Wang never had a chance to see the homeland of his forefathers as a child. After coming to the U.K., he settled in Liverpool and studied metallurgy at the University of Liverpool. His fascination with his heritage brought him head to head with an icon of the 20th century.
With all the wonders of China clouded in mystery, it's open door policy still years to come, Mr. Wang took a chance and wrote to Mao Tze Dong himself. Surprising enough six months later he was given an invitation to secretly visit and tour China. During his tour, he was invited to dine at the celebrated herbal restaurant in Beijing. The food and spirits fascinated him and the seed was planted into his heart and mind.
After returning to Liverpool Mr. Wang was invigorated and inspired, he wanted to bridge the long and wide gap between east and west. He became very active in the community, becoming the first Chinese community worker in Britain in 1977. His passion for the arts also lead him to create the "Tai Shen Theatre Group", later moving to London in 1982, he eventually opened his first Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic, "Herbal Inn", in 1986 and the rest is history!
With the opening of Palace Chine restaurants, Brian Wang enabled his vision of ushering a whole new generation of Chinese cuisine. In the past it was limited to China's emperors and elites, now Palace Chine offers these wonderful dishes to the masses. Located in London and Edinburgh, Palace Chine has broken the boundaries between east and west in terms of authentic Chinese cuisine. Enjoy our many offerings, we hope to see you soon.
Opened in 1999 our London restaurant is based on a more mainstream concept, traditional and authentic cuisine. We also offer a wide selection using traditional recipes passed down generations to give you the best possible culinary experience.
In September we open our newest restaurant in Leeds, closing the gap between our London and Edinburgh locations, and offering better and more convenient access to U.K. residents. We hope to see you there at our grand opening!
