Introduction
With two dedicated conference centres, Murray Edwards College is an inspirational conference venue, with modern, flexible meeting space in the centre of Cambridge.
Murray Edwards College was originally called New Hall and founded by Dame Rosemary Murray in 1954 as a College for women, as it remains today. Initially sited on Silver Street, the Darwin family (Charles Darwin) gave their family home ‘the Orchard’ to the College in 1962 to allow them to grow and meet demand for more students. Darwin College now stands on the old site on Silver Street in Cambridge city centre.
Architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon were chosen and building the new College began in 1964 and was completed in 1965, allowing the College to house 215 undergraduates and 25 graduate students in 1970.
Rosemary Murray, as well as being the first president of New Hall, was also the first woman Vice-Chancellor in either Oxford or Cambridge. She retired in 1981 and was succeeded as President of New Hall by Dr Valerie Pearl. During her presidency, Dr Pearl worked in partnership with the Kaetsu Educational Foundation in Tokyo to complete the original architectural plan of the College by constructing a new building, adding 112 student rooms, a lecture theatre and conference facilities. It was opened in 1996.
