Laura J Hansen

Laura J Hansen is Just Law’s most experienced attorney. She has been practicing family law since 2003 when she graduated from BYU. Laura did public interest law for the first 5 years of her practice with Legal Services and the Office of Guardian ad Litem. While there, she gained enormous experience doing thousands of high conflict custody and divorce cases, Juvenile Court law cases and going to Trial. Laura founded Just Law with Jess Couser in 2010 after they met while Jess was doing an internship at the Office of Guardian ad Litem where Laura was working as an attorney for abused and neglected children. Together, they decided to start a different type of law firm that was child-centered and family-focused and that worked toward quick, successful outcomes of family law cases.

Prior to law school, Laura’s undergraduate training occurred at the University of Utah and Humboldt State University. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with degrees in both Psychology and Political Science. She has a keen interest in psychology and has accumulated years of practical and academic experience with individuals with personality disorders and other psychological disorders that affect divorce and custody cases. This experience allows her to be a powerful advocate for families and children and to bring creative solutions to the table.

Laura is experienced with mediation, completing basic and advanced domestic law mediation training in 2007 and 2008 and participating in 100’s of mediations. She is a firm believer that in most cases, individuals have the capability of creating positive agreements that benefit their family.

While mediation is successful in many cases, when a case needs a ferocious litigator, Laura has the skills and experience to succeed at Trial. She was a nationally ranked debater in high school and also debated in college and she brings her advocacy skills to the litigation side of her practice, winning dozens of custody and divorce Trials.

Laura received professional training and certification in the area of Collaborative Law and has been a member of the International Association of Collaborative Professionals for over 10 years. She has been the President of the Utah Association of Collaborative Professionals and has been trained in Collaborative law by the International Association of Collaborative Professionals. She is one of the few attorneys in Utah with experience handling dozens of successful Collaborative Law cases.

Laura is a founding member of the Utah Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC) and has served on their Board since its inception. Laura has been an active member of the National Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC) since 2009 and has participated in numerous trainings and presentations.

Laura does volunteer work as a pro bono Private Guardian ad Litem, at the Tuesday Night Bar Clinic and with Wasatch Kids Camps, a non-profit summer camp for children.

Laura is also an owner of Runa Nordic Spa which offers thermotherapy and Nordic based spa treatments at a small spa in Millcreek. Her clients benefit from this endeavor by receiving free and discounted massage and other wellness treatments that help them cope during this difficult time in their lives.

Laura lives with her two children and dog Lexi, in Millcreek and enjoys Latin & swing dancing, skiing, traveling, water sports and rock climbing.
