Introduction
The trade figures for October has been a dampener with Indian exports declining by around five percent during the month. But the overall growth of exports by 4.7% in the first seven months of the fiscal year is commendable given that global export growth has hovered around 3% with exports even shrinking in some months.
The higher rate of growth cloaked by Indian exports is not an entirely new phenomenon. In fact most recent numbers of India’s export performance as compared with its competitors in 2013 is even more impressive. Though India was ranked low in the 19th position in 2013 among global majors with its merchandize exports of $ 313 billion constituting a mere 1.7% share of the global merchandize exports its exports picked up by as much as 6%. This was not only thrice the global merchandize exports growth of 2% but also just a few notches lower than 8% growth achieved by China.
