Introduction
Brian Hoey, Harpist
Special Music for a Special Occasion.
Brian’s harp music adds enchantment and elegance to all occasions. In addition to weddings, civil ceremonies and other celebrations, Brian is available for corporate events, including dining-in nights, product launches, parties and chill-out sessions! The presence and sound of a harp provides a sophisticated backdrop to your special event.
Brian plays the Celtic harp; this stands approximately three feet tall. The repertoire is centred on Irish and Scottish harp airs with added variety from American, Paraguayan and English tunes. Many of my tunes were composed for Irish and Scottish royalty and nobility. ‘Give Me Your Hand, ’The Fairy Queen’ and ‘I Love My Love’ are just some of the romantic pieces that I play at weddings.
Now you can be entertained by the same music that Chieftains, Queens and Kings enjoyed centuries ago.
Brian can offer an extended repertoire by adding acoustic guitar music to the performance. All of his music is highly melodic, enchanting and soothing.
Things to Consider
Venue
Brian is based in North East England and offers his services throughout Tyne and Wear, Co. Durham, Northumberland, the Borders and North Yorkshire.
There needs to be enough room for Brian, the harp and any amplification equipment to sit comfortably. This means a space at least six feet square. There must be adequate white light with no coloured lights shining on the performance area.
Normally, Brian will arrive an hour beforehand to set up. He will need to get changed, put the harp in position, tune up and do a sound check. After the event, it takes him around thirty minutes to pack away.
If your venue has steep stairs, or a long walk from available parking, please mention this in advance.
If you've asked Brian to play for more than one hour, He will need to take short breaks - around five minutes for every forty minutes of playing.
Volume
The Celtic harp is a relatively resonant instrument that does not need amplifying in small venues. However, for medium to large sized events, or noisy venues, Brian will bring amplification. He needs a 13 amp socket for his amplifier.
Weather
Harps are sensitive instruments that are damaged by high humidity and strong sunlight. If your event is outside, you will need to provide a covered and level position for the harp, inside a marquee or gazebo is ideal. If the ground is not hard a piece of carpet or groundsheet will help prevent the harp and harpist sinking into the ground.
Booking Schedule
Bookings are made on a first come, first served basis. Desirable dates and times over festive, holiday and wedding seasons can get filled up quickly, so booking well in advance helps avoid disappointment.
How Much Does it Cost?
The engagements Brian accepts are varied, thus prices are quoted individually for each booking. It's really helpful if you can include as much information as possible when you ask for a quote - i.e. venue, timings, type of event etc. Weddings are charged per event (in case they don't quite run to time!), while events such as restaurant bookings and parties are charged by the hour.
As a guide, prices start from:
Wedding ceremony - £250
Drinks reception (up to 1.5 hours) - £250
Wedding Breakfast (up to 2 hours) - £250
Corporate /restaurant event - £250 for up to two hours then £100 per hour.
Discounts are available when booking more than one part of the wedding day as well as for repeat restaurant engagements.
What Happens Next?
If you'd like to make an enquiry, you are welcome to email or telephone Brian for a quote.
Assuming that you want to go ahead, Brian will then send you a booking form which you need to send back with a £50 deposit to secure your booking. You will also need to sign a copy of Brian's 'terms and conditions'. For convenience, these forms are usually sent out by email.
The balance of the fee is then due seven days before the event. Brian will get in touch around a week before your event to reassure you that everything is going to plan, and to discuss any last minute arrangements.
