Introduction
A steaming pot of mussels accompanied by a bowl of freshly made crisp golden frites with creamy mayonnaise is the heart of Belgian food. Every restaurant in Belgium has its own way of cooking mussels - some offer dozens of variations - and we, too, have our favourites.
The true beauty of Belgian food is its sublime simplicity. The ingredients that are used for the recipes at Belgo are typical of those used in traditional Belgian dishes such as Waterzooi and Carbonade. The primary ingredients of Belgian food are: leeks, asparagus, potatoes, beetroot, carrots, fennel, onions, celery, tyyme, chives, rosemary, turnips, radish, beef, chicken, fish butter and cream to name but a few.
Belgos offer one of the largest selections of Belgian beers in the UK. There are over 800 kinds of beer made in Belgium and the average Belgian consumes 150 litres of beer per person per year. Just to prove that Belgium does beer better than anybody else, the world's first beer academy opened in Herk-de-Stad, in the Belgian province of Limburg, in 1999.
Like French wine there's a lot to learn about Belgian beer. Obviously you don't have to be an expert to enjoy a pint of leffe (and don't worry - we won't be testing you), however, if you do feel the urge to know more here are few helpful links. So go grab yourself a pint and get reading.
