Introduction
If your idea of a good cocktail joint is one where the bartender calls himself a mixologist & the martinis cost more than a tenner, Be At One is not for you. This mini-chain of fun-loving drinking dens, found mostly in areas overrun by twenty/thirtysomething City workers, puts its success down to being deliberately unpretentious. Most of its drinks could have come straight from 80s' film Cocktail, with sex on the beach, the Alabama slammer, & the kamikaze all making appearances, but there's plenty to suit more modern tastes too: an espresso martini or mango Collins, say. A generous two-for-one happy hour runs early evening, & the soundtrack blasts unashamed nostalgia: think Africa by Toto or anything from the Jackson Five. Inevitably, this ends up with handbags thrown into heaps, hands waving in the air, & the friendly crowd leaving their cares ' & street cred ' far behind them.
