    Winter has arrived here in NE Ohio. Although temperatures were in the high 50's this weekend and we had a lot of rain Old Man Winter is on his way back. We've had our trucks/plows out several times and are gearing up for more. We wanted to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. Merry Christmas from B&L Yard Smith!

    Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today couldn't be more befitting for fall in NE Ohio. Take advantage of the cooler temperatures and get to planting. Not only is it the perfect time to get some trees and shrubs in the ground but it's also the best time to plant your spring flowering bulbs. Select bulbs that are firm to the touch. Plant them two times the depth of the bulb and between 2-4 in apart for small ones (like crocus) and 6-8 inches apart for larger (like tulip). Happy fall planting!

    Spider mites are bad this year. If you notice webs across your perennials or shrubs you'll need to treat them. We recommend Bayer 3 in 1 (available at any home improvement or gardening center retailer). Make sure to read the label directions for an appropriate mixture ratio and apply in the early morning or early evening.     Planting trees in strategic places can cut down on ac/heating costs. Here in Ohio we still have a couple of good months to get trees in the ground and often Fall is a great time to grab a tree at a discounted price.
