We think Devon is a very special place and want to help keep it that way for everyone to enjoy. After moving to the county, we now own and run a small B&B in Devon. Our guests have been fantastic and feel the same way as we do about this exceptional part of the world but most are very surprised by how much of the money they spend on their stay, goes on agents commission. Some of our close neighbours who’ve been in the hospitality trade for many years say they are charging the same today as they were 10 years ago and they now pay at least 15%, sometimes up to 23%, in commission!
Don’t get us wrong, the booking agents and review sites do a very good job of bringing us business and the opinions of our guests posted to these websites are very welcome feedback and one of our best adverts. It’s just the commission and charges hurt and take money out of the local economy it was spent in. It’s not about getting rid of the agents its more a question of redressing the balance.
You can help. All you have to do is find a B&B, hotel, self-catering property or other Devon owned holiday business on aholidayindevon.co.uk and book direct with them. If you ask, they may even reduce their normal rates and share some of the saved commission with you - a better deal for both!
