Introduction
It's the food we craved and grew up eating made from our mother's hands.
The History & Future of Vietnamese Culinary Inspiration
The Vietnamese culinary inspiration has influences dating back from 2500 BC from all South East Asian countries like; Thailand, India, China, as well as European Countries like; France, Portugal, and in recent history; the United States of America. Through many centuries of war and peace, the Vietnamese people have gathered and retained all of the pure goodness from those experiences and fused them into the Vietnamese culture.
The fruits of Vietnam's historic labor are often represented in the hard working Vietnamese people and our basic product we call food. The evolution of Vietnamese culinary excellence is on a path of becoming a healthy mainstream favorite and has already gained a lot of respect worldwide. From the rice plates to noodle dishes, curries to soups, seafood to BBQs, pastries to rolls, plus all the healthy colorful ingredients and succulent sauces, make it an irresistible hit. The future of Vietnamese cuisine looks promising. Soon we will see a popularity explosion of the Vietnamese cuisine similar to the 'Sushi Craze?.
Family History
In 1975 our family fled their homeland and sought for refuge in the U.S. after the fall of Saigon. After the struggle, chaos, heroism, and pure luck, California was our final destination where the rest of our family was supposed to meet. After the dust settled, we were fortunate to have our entire family alive and safe. Our new life started in Oakland with a big family of Vietnamese refugees, their kids, most born overseas, and a few American born. Some of our parents had decent jobs but they were never steady. We survived on our new home's welfare system, our fishing and farming skills, and a lot of home cooking.
In the early 1980's in Oakland, we had simple but memorable family gatherings all the time that included just the basics. It was just our family and our food together under one roof. Gatherings usually started with authentic Vietnamese appetizers like fresh salads, shrimp, and imperial rolls, plus beer and peanuts for the adults. In general, the kids would play and break dance. The men played cards and watch sports. The women socialized, prepared the food, and sang Karaoke. The main courses consisted of, but were not limited to, family style dishes like; succulent lemon grass meat skewers, hot and sour soups, clay pot specialties, a fresh pot of steamed white rice and noodles. Those dishes would fill the middle portion of the dinning room table. Everyone surrounding the food had their chopsticks, rice bowl, and plate, sharing all the dishes together while socializing, laughing, and just being together.
Years and years then past as the we all grew up and lost touch with each other including our own culture in some cases. We all naturally went down our own separate paths for many reasons like college, careers, etc. In January of 2006, an opportunity arose reuniting our entire family, sparking more inspiration and passion for our Vietnamese culture and heritage. After talking the talk, we walked the walk, and made it happen in a year hurdling over all obstacles in the way. Today we have a family restaurant that represents who we are, how we grew up, and how far we've come.
