Introduction
Jack Raven Bushcraft courses take place in Westwell, Kent, just 50 miles from the centre of London, in quite stunning ancient woodland in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We have access to around 60 or so acres of beautiful broadleaf woodland.
All of our bushcraft training is designed so that you don’t need any previous experience, and is entirely hands on so that you leave us with simple, practical and repeatable skills. We are certain that you will have a lot of fun along the way!
Your training takes place at an expedition style camp with a yurt and wood burning stove, a parachute, a kitchen area, work benches and a composting toilet. We have areas where you can pitch a hammock, tarp or small tent, cleared of standing and hanging dead wood, or you can camp on the adjacent working farm campsite.
We place a strong emphasis on natural history, woodland management and conservation throughout all of our teachings as we believe that this knowledge should inform everything we do in bushcraft. Preserving and enhancing the woodland in which we teach is factored into all of our activities.
We offer a wide range of courses including woodlore, bodging, woodcraft, tracking, earth skills, carving, and wild food courses in Kent.
Take a look around our website and if you have any questions on our bushcraft courses, team building events, or need more information about anything, then don’t hesitate to contact us.

Gary Johnston
Lead Instructor
Gary grew up in the west country surrounded by open countryside, in what is now a nature reserve managed by the Devon Wildlife Trust. Seeing deer, foxes, badgers and other wildlife yards from the backdoor was a regular occurrence. Allowed to venture out on his own from a very early age, he spent much of his childhood wandering through the woods, making ‘dens’, climbing trees (and occasionally falling out of them), swimming in rivers and otherwise enjoying the surroundings. School holidays were often spent on an uncle’s farm on the edge of Dartmoor.
Still in his early teens he would regularly spend 4 or 5 days at a time wandering around and sleeping out on the moors, mostly knowing where he was. These early experiences led to a lifelong love of the British countryside and culminated in Gary qualifying as a bushcraft instructor and founding Jack Raven Bushcraft.
He is an Associate Tutor for the Field Studies Council where he teaches a number of courses. For the last 8 years Gary has practiced traditional Yang family Tai Chi Quan and is getting better, slowly.

Nicola Clowes
Assistant
Amongst all the other activities Nicola undertakes as an assistant, she is also our camp cook and continually amazes us all with the quality of the meals she produces. Nicola is continually devising new wild food recipes for us all to try, recent additions are an excellent venison curry, nettle pakoras, hogweed frittata, ramson malfatti and burdock dahl. She is also interested in herbal remedies and has made things such as yarrow creme (small cuts & abrasions and minor burns) self heal creme (general aches and pains) and comfrey ointment (sprains, joints and pulled muscles) and various tinctures. Needless to say, Nicola often leads our plant and tree walks. Nicola has developed a passion for carving and many of our family and friends now own spoons carved by her.
