Depakote is prescribed to treat acute manic episodes in those patients with bipolar disorder and to treat seizure disorders in adults and older children. Paxil and Zoloft are antidepressants belonging to a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).There is an increased risk of major birth defects among infants born to women that took Depakote, Paxil, or Zoloft during pregnancy such as neural tube closure defects. Other major birth defects such as craniofacial defects, cardiovascular malformations, and cognitive development have been reported in children born to women that took Depakote, Zoloft, or Paxil during their pregnancy.
