Tokyo Teppan Grill Austin

Despite the strip mall storefront, the owners have created a peaceful environment. Several teppan yaki grills with ringside seating run along two sides of the space. There's another area for those who don't want a floor show. Teppan yaki combinations all feature a chef/performer who slices, dices, juggles and shakes, all with gleaming, death-defying knives, plus sound effects and stand-up humor. A small sushi bar features sea urchin and maki.

Teppan yaki lunch specials range from $7.25 to $8.25 and include soup, a salad and steamed rice.

A welcome addition to an area of the city that has little sophisticated dining. Serving a wide range of Japanese appetizers, sushi and entrées cooked tableside on hibachi grills. The sushi is on a par with that of many of the city's better restaurants, and there's a substantial entertainment factor in watching the chef manipulate food on the grill. Moderate.
