Introduction

Britannia Spice is an exceptional restaurant which has won many international awards since it first took the Edinburgh dining scene by storm in 2000. In 2006 alone, it was named Best in Scotland by both BIBA and the British Curry Awards.

Founded by Dr Wali Uddin and Ranil Saparamadu as the new millennium dawned, Britannia Spice has won widespread praise for its exotic multi-ethnic cuisine and stylish atmosphere. Its wide ranging menus offer diners a choice of Indian, Bangladeshi, Nepali and Thai cuisine, all freshly and expertly prepared.

The restaurant was converted from a whisky bond at the entrance to the former Leith docks, at the heart of the multi-million pound redevelopment of the previously derelict dock area. The Royal Yacht Britannia is berthed within sight of the premises.

Paris-based interior designer Arshad Alam was commissioned to produce a design that would be exciting and new and yet reflect in many ways the nautical heritage of the site, the ambience of the finest ships of the line that sailed to the mysterious east. Mr Alam's design has attracted universal acclaim ' the premises are light and airy during the day and yet discrete and intimate in the evenings.

The restaurant can comfortably accommodate large parties and yet still feel welcoming for couples and lone diners. It regularly hosts charity events and functions, with live performances of music and dance.

Attention to detail is central to the ethos behind Britannia Spice which applies the highest standards throughout, in order to maximise the customers' experience. It rightly prides itself on the quality of the food and the friendly, helpful staff. The high number of regular customers speaks for itself.

“Fantastic - worthwhile to visit! Britannia Spice, Leith, Edinburgh
The service and the ambience - let alone the fantastic food was an absolute dream. This is a 'total experience' for that special event and the pricing was not outrageous considering that this truly is the very ultimate fine dining experience. Our Starter Tandoori Lamb Chop and Main Course Katmandu Murgh are exceptional .
We shall be back . Thank you to all staff for your helpful advice

Britannia Spice – as its name suggests – is located beside the Royal Yacht Britannia down on the Shore in Leith. The restaurant continues the nautical theme with navy and gold throughout and the tables being a polished wood, just like the deck of a boat. The room is large and spacious so it feels very airy – just what you want on the muggy nights we are experiencing at the moment.

On the night we visited, the restaurant was fairly quiet so the service we got was second to none. Our waiter greeted us at the front door with a smile and our first drink arrived at the table very promptly. The menu at Britannia Spice is very extensive, with dishes available from India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Thailand. We particularly liked this feature as it separated the restaurant from all the millions of other Indian restaurants in Edinburgh.
