Introduction
When Cotton Ding planned the first Cotton's during the summer of 2003, she considered the many friends she had made in Shanghai. Like her, few of them were from Shanghai, and even fewer could find a place where they could relax and feel like a local. She wanted to offer the alternative, and so, on September 12, 2003, the first Cotton's opened to a packed house, and very quickly became a Shanghai favorite. Stylish and fashionable, but never pretentious, Cotton's Yueyang Road offered customers a comfortable garden setting where friends met beneath a leafy canopy of French concession trees. Longtime customers not only were greeted by name, but often with their favorite drink.
On December 31, 2004, the first Cotton's closed and Cotton Ding began the long search for the right venue. She wanted an intimate setting that felt like a home, and she found it: a three-story 1930s villa in the French Concession. On December 31, 2005, exactly one year after closing her first location, Cotton Ding opened Cotton's Anting Road. A Shanghai favorite had not only returned, but improved.
The week starts with Sunday Brunch, and at Cotton's, it's a friends and family affair, served indoors or outdoors, with a hearty set menu highlighted by fresh juice and an endless refill of coffee or tea. The week continues with a quiet lunch, served in a relaxed atmosphere that's a great break from the workday. For those who can quite let the city fade away.
You won't find many sights more welcoming than the cozy glow of Cotton's villa after dark. Slip into one of the comfy seats in a quiet corner beside a fireplace, or stretch out on the benches or the bed in the garden, beneath Shanghai's (sort of) starry night. At the end of a day, Cotton's feels like coming home.
